Christ Apostolic Church Tenets

A Foundation of Holiness and Pentecostalism

Founded in 1918 as the Aladura Group, the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) upholds core beliefs in holiness, divine healing, and the sufficiency of God. Following the Great Revival of 1930, during which many received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the CAC emerged as the world’s first Aladura Pentecostal Church, blending holiness with Pentecostal traditions.

Doctrinal Foundations

CAC derives its doctrines from the Holy Scriptures, the teachings of its founding fathers and mothers, sermons, and collaboration with other churches. In 1931, the CAC began cooperating with The Apostolic Church in England, adopting eleven Tenets of Faith. By 1940, the Church added two more Tenets, bringing the total to thirteen.

What Are Tenets and Their Purpose?

The word “tenet” originates from the Latin tenere, meaning “to hold.” Tenets are beliefs or doctrines held to be true. The Tenets of the CAC are foundational Biblical truths that guide the Church and protect against false teachings amidst shifting moral and spiritual beliefs (2 Peter 2:1, Titus 1:11).

Each Tenet represents a principle derived from the Bible, and the reasons for its belief are elaborated to deepen understanding.

The Thirteen Tenets of the CAC

1. The Unity of the Godhead and the Trinity of Persons

The CAC affirms belief in the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—each distinct yet equally and fully God.

Why Believe This?
The Bible declares there is one true God, rejecting all false, man-made idols. Though the concept of the Trinity is complex, Scripture illustrates God’s triune nature (e.g., Genesis 1:26, Matthew 28:19).

Key Scriptures: Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 13:14, 1 John 5:7

2. Human Depravity, Repentance, Regeneration, and Eternal Doom of the Impenitent

Humanity is deeply flawed by sin, necessitating repentance and spiritual renewal through the Holy Spirit. Those who reject God face eternal separation in hell.

Why Believe This?
Human goodness is insufficient for salvation; reconciliation with God requires repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

Key Scriptures: Romans 3:23, Ephesians 2, Revelation 20:11-15

3. The Virgin Birth, Sinless Life, Atoning Death, Resurrection, Ascension, and Intercession of Jesus Christ; His Second Coming and Millennial Reign

Jesus, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died for humanity’s sins, and rose triumphantly. He intercedes for believers and will return to reign on earth.

Why Believe This?
Christ’s miraculous birth and sinless life qualified Him as the perfect sacrifice for humanity’s sins, fulfilling God’s redemptive plan.

Key Scriptures: Matthew 1:18-25, Hebrews 2:9, Acts 2:29-32

4. Justification and Sanctification Through Christ’s Finished Work

Believers are justified and sanctified through Jesus’ atonement, empowered by the Holy Spirit to grow in Christlikeness.

Why Believe This?
Salvation is a divine gift, not achieved by human effort. God’s grace enables believers to live holy lives.

Key Scriptures: Romans 3:21-24, 2 Corinthians 3:17-18

5. Baptism of the Holy Spirit With Evidence

The baptism of the Holy Spirit empowers believers, often evidenced by speaking in tongues, visions, and prophecy.

Why Believe This?
This experience, foundational to the Church, equips Christians for ministry and spiritual growth.

Key Scriptures: Acts 1:8, Acts 2

6. The Nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Spiritual gifts, as outlined in 1 Corinthians 12, are given to edify and strengthen the Church.

Why Believe This?
These gifts empower believers to serve and build up the body of Christ effectively.

Key Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 12:4-28, Galatians 5:22-23

7. The Sacraments of Baptism by Immersion and the Lord’s Supper

Baptism symbolizes the believer’s new life in Christ, while the Lord’s Supper commemorates His death and resurrection.

Why Believe This?
These acts deepen the believer’s understanding of Christ’s work and obedience to His commands.

Key Scriptures: Matthew 28:19, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

8. The Divine Inspiration and Authority of Scripture

The Bible, inspired by the Holy Spirit, is the ultimate authority on faith and practice.

Why Believe This?
Scripture’s coherence and fulfilled prophecies affirm its divine origin and reliability.

Key Scriptures: John 1:1-4, 2 Timothy 3:16-17

9. Church Government by God-Given Ministries

Leadership in the Church is provided by apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, as guided by God.

Why Believe This?
God equips leaders to serve His Church, fostering spiritual growth and unity.

Key Scriptures: Ephesians 4:11-13, 1 Timothy 3:1-13

10. The Possibility of Falling From Grace

Believers may forfeit salvation through willful disobedience and neglect of faith.

Why Believe This?
Salvation is maintained through a committed relationship with God, empowered by His grace.

Key Scriptures: Hebrews 6:4-6, 1 Timothy 1:19

11. Tithes and Offerings

Tithes and offerings are obligatory acts of worship, used to support Church ministry and advance the Gospel.

Key Scriptures: Malachi 3:10-12, Genesis 28:20-21

12. Divine Healing Through Faith in Christ

Healing is an integral part of the CAC’s faith, relying on Christ’s name and the power of His blood.

Key Scriptures: James 5:14-18

13. Faith in God’s Provision

The Church trusts God as Jehovah Jireh, the ultimate provider of all needs.

Key Scriptures: Philippians 4:19, Genesis 22:12-14
